I don’t know if the word “creepy” has aged very well. I’m not even sure I agree this sentiment is more creepy than just sincere. Good for you, Greg, in a way. |

I totally missed the early signs that Greg had a thing for Eve.
Ugh. It bugs me how much Greg is basically me back in my twenties.
…yeah, back then, and definitely not now, for sure.
Me too. I think it’s not an uncommon place to end up as a 20 something male…definitely a good place to grow past. Greg tried being “Alpha”, aping the toxic behaviour he’d come to envy in others before growing past it. Park…didn’t. He got more so, and his insecure boasting on his last arc kind of made him the Anti-Greg…
I love how Eve didn't actually notice that there'd been an ambush.
We're meant to understand that Greg has feelings for Eve, but Eve is almost repulsed by the idea, right? That's what "creepy" in her reaction says to me.
I took the creepy more in response to the phrasing of "I only want you to be happy" – it kind of feels like a line out of the "friendzoned" bro playbook. It's a recorded phenomenon for men to say things along those lines to women and then turn into retributive assholes when they don't get what they want out of the situation. Not that I think Greg is that type, but just some context as to why that line could be seen as creepy. Even outside of that, only desiring the happiness of one person – especially when that person is an unrequited crush – is arguably pretty unhealthy and not conducive to a good relationship of any type.
I think we actually agree, believe it or not.
I don't think Eve is repulsed by the reaction, or that it's necessarily wrong of her to say – I think her reaction says, I am not into this, especially at this moment – please do not foist your feelings upon me. [although I agree the word "creepy" itself is indeed a strangely outdated word! who woulda thunk!]
I think the phrase now (according to my 12 year old daughter, anyway) would either be “CRINGE” or “Desperate, much?”
Greg is a great example of how Octopus Pie characters grew up in a really realistic way. He comes off as childishly infatuated in the beginning, and then trying to find his own niche and personality during the biking arc, and then in bar scene towards the end, it's so good.
"You wouldn't believe how easy it is to say now" is my favorite line of the whole series.
I had to read back (well, forward) to find that line and remember the context. You're right; it's SO good. Thanks for the reminder of it. 🙂 http://www.octopuspie.com/2016-06-15/908-909-you-…
