Marek has eyes? Man am I disappointed. I always thought he was blind, but had a hightened sense of positioning from his beard, much like the whiskers of a cat.
As a wanna-be cartoonist, I am curious if finally showing Marek's eyes and eyebrows was done to extend his range of expression, if only for this particular moment.
I swear to god, the way I internally hear his voice changed when I saw them.
Longtime reader, first time commenter.. Octopus Pie is just lovely. It brings me such joy to read new updates even when they are sad or poignant.. because they are so relatable! I love THIS strip because this is the perfect moment to reveal Marek's eyes. To me it symbolizes that he's gone from an all-knowing, wise, somewhat-caricature (in Eve's eyes) to a complicated, REAL person (in the OP universe) that really doesn't have it all figured out. He's gone from a stylized cartoon to a more real dude. Windows to the soul indeed. I want to go back and read Marek's duck wisdom and tie it all back to this. Thanks for such an awesome, literary comic, Meredith!
i was scared of such deep change in the life and actions of the characters, i really do love this comic, but such a warm lovely moment and seeing his eyes after so long are worth it, its a good balance, it was a good run but there are other stories to be told, and that's ok. thank you for everything Meredith, whether you'll continue writing the comic with different scenery or if this is the end, a beautiful run :)
awwww this is beautiful also this seems to be as good a time as any to say that meredith gran has inspired me more than any other comic artist with the quality of her art and storytelling and everything and this is the best
What's kind of sad is that seeing Marek's eyes changed MY perspective on him too. What an amazing choice of transition. Thank you for finding new and amazing ways for this comic to change in ways that represent changes in real life.
You know, revealing the eyes at this moment (for me at least) kind of brought Marek more into the real world, where he's no longer this static, perfect character.
I totally see Marek as a person now and not a charicature. Finally seeing his eyes gives me an entirely new understanding of eve's life to this point, no matter how strange that sounds.
It is interesting that in the second eye panel he crosses his arms and hunches up. It may be cold outside, but he is closing himself off by doing that in such a personal moment.
There are comments sharing the joys and insight of the symbolism of Marek's eyes, the stylistic choice that showed a transition from a caricature of hippy culture and a foreigner pursuing the American Dream to this real man who's just as confused and scared as all the other characters.
And then there's "Supreyes, motherfucker".
Honestly, this was the best comment of this thread, thank you.

I didn't even notice the eyes until the penultimate panel. And then I spent like a minute screaming HE HAS EYES over and over again.
POW
WHY IS HIS THIRD EYE NOT SAYING POW
