This is a low-key one, but it was my shot at a lot of ideas that had been bubbling. I’d been hit with the revelation that, as a young adult, I hadn’t actually done much for anybody. Now that I was on my own, what was my relationship to the nurturing adults in my life? Did they still worry about me? Did I have anything to offer them? This is also a bit of a reveal, that the moms have been following the girls’ story together this whole time. Diane still gets some pleasure just being in the presence of youth. It gives her strength to protect them from certain truths. But she also has a revelation: she’s been standing in the way of a direct, unmediated line between Eve and her mom, when that’s clearly what Eve wants. |
