Bad feeling – everyone caught up in their own problems. It’s exhausting even on a good night to ride that crowded subway home. Eve and Jane kind of sense that they’re in the same boat, that eventually they need to get off at their stop and face their problems, whether they know the full extent of them or not. |

All I really have to add is I love Marigold's little deer legs in that last panel.
I've always liked this part of the story because it feels real. Mar's tired and grouchy, maybe because she was cold, and had to talk about Hanna with Marek, and is trying to quit smoking … or maybe just because sometimes people are tired and grouchy. Jane has to deal with that (and, to her credit, does). Eventually a relationship, if it's going to be "real," has to move out of the bed and into the rest of the world.
Man, quitting smoking is just so incredibly fucking hard that it really bears down on every part of your life. Everything makes you angry, and patience is nil. I'm saying this as someone who fell in love with a smoker that wanted to quit – I've never personally smoked and was initially oblivious. It's crucial that both parties are on the same page because the quitter has to go through hell and back. I totally understand Jane here, while my situation was different I was once a young foolish lover too!
btw we've been together 9 years now ;). Took many, many tries and a lot of patience. Sorry for ramble haha
As a former pack-a-day smoker who had to try to quit three times (including a 2-year stint smoke-free before falling back into it!), I very much understand the difficulties your partner was going through. I also commend you for your patience. 🙂
I've been cigarette-free for over fifteen years, now. I don't miss it. But it took a long time to not miss it.
